What Does Microneedling Do? Benefits, Results and What to Expect

Microneedling, also known as skin needling or collagen induction therapy, works by creating controlled microchannels in the skin. This activates the skin's natural repair response, stimulating new collagen and elastin and gradually improving the quality of the treated skin.

It's one of those treatments that can be useful for several different concerns, which is also why it's important to understand what you're trying to achieve before booking it. At Skin Studio, we use professional microneedling to improve concerns including uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines, selected acne scarring and overall skin quality.

The result develops progressively as the skin repairs and remodels itself, rather than being a temporary change to the surface.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a professional skin treatment that uses very fine, sterile needles to create controlled microchannels at selected depths within the skin.

Your body responds to those microchannels as it would to any controlled repair process. Fibroblast activity increases, new collagen and elastin are produced and the treated tissue gradually remodels.

Treatment depth can be adjusted according to the area and concern, which is one of the reasons professional microneedling is quite different from simply rolling needles across the skin at home.

What Does Microneedling Actually Do to Your Skin?

The simplest way to understand microneedling is that we're deliberately triggering a repair response.

Once the controlled microchannels are created, the skin begins healing them. As part of that process, cells responsible for producing collagen become more active and new tissue develops.

That doesn't happen immediately. Your skin may look fresher once the initial redness settles, but the changes we're really interested in take place over the following weeks as collagen forms and remodels.

This is why microneedling is particularly useful when the concern is the quality and structure of the skin itself, rather than something we simply want to improve temporarily at the surface.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

The benefits of microneedling depend on what is being treated. It isn't one treatment producing the same result for every skin concern.

Smoother Skin Texture

Uneven or rough texture is one of the concerns microneedling can address particularly well. As collagen develops and the treated tissue remodels, the surface of the skin can gradually become smoother and more even.

This can be useful when your skin doesn't necessarily have one obvious problem, but simply doesn't feel as smooth or refined as it once did.

Less Visible Pores

Microneedling cannot physically close your pores, and we wouldn't claim that it can. Pore size is influenced by factors including genetics, oil production and skin structure.

What microneedling can do is improve collagen support and the texture of the skin surrounding the pores. As that skin becomes firmer and smoother, enlarged pores can become less noticeable.

Softer Fine Lines

Collagen naturally declines as we age, which contributes to changes in firmness, texture and the development of fine lines.

Because microneedling stimulates collagen production, it can be particularly useful for early textural ageing and fine lines. The improvement is gradual and comes from strengthening the skin rather than changing your facial structure.

Improved Acne Scarring

Microneedling is well established as a treatment for certain types of acne scars, particularly indented or atrophic scarring.

The controlled repair response encourages collagen production within and around the scar tissue, helping soften scar edges and improve the surrounding texture over time.

Scar type matters. Deep ice-pick scars, tethered scars and other forms of scarring may need a different or combined treatment approach. Active inflammatory acne is also a different concern from the scarring it leaves behind.

A systematic review of microneedling for acne scarring found improvement in scar appearance across the included studies, although protocols and outcomes varied. Read the published research on microneedling for acne scars.

If breakouts are still active, we would usually start by assessing and managing the acne itself rather than jumping straight to scar treatment. You can read more about treating breakouts and post-acne concerns.

More Even-Looking Skin

Microneedling can form part of a treatment plan for selected pigmentation concerns and post-acne marks, but this is an area where diagnosis matters.

Pigmentation isn't one condition. Sun-related pigmentation, post-inflammatory marks and melasma behave differently and shouldn't automatically receive the same treatment.

This is particularly important in Bali, where strong year-round UV exposure can influence both pigmentation and recovery after treatment. We assess the pigmentation first and place considerable emphasis on sun protection before deciding whether microneedling belongs in the treatment plan.

Does Microneedling Really Work?

Yes, there is good clinical evidence supporting professional microneedling for concerns including facial rejuvenation and acne scarring.

A 2025 systematic review of 21 studies examining microneedling for facial rejuvenation found that commonly measured improvements included wrinkles, skin texture and photoageing, with high levels of reported patient satisfaction. Most of the studies involved multiple treatment sessions. Read the systematic review of microneedling for facial rejuvenation.

The important word is improvement. Microneedling isn't designed to completely remove scars, pores or lines. It stimulates a biological process that can gradually improve the quality and structure of the skin.

The result depends on the concern being treated, the treatment protocol, your starting skin condition and your individual response.

What Results Can You Expect From Microneedling?

Depending on why you're having treatment, you may notice smoother texture, less prominent pores, softer fine lines, improvement in suitable acne scars and better overall skin quality.

Results build progressively because collagen takes time to develop.

Immediately after treatment, your skin is responding to the procedure itself. The longer-term result comes from the repair and remodelling that follows.

During the first week, redness and sensitivity settle and the skin begins recovering. Over approximately four to six weeks, collagen remodelling becomes more established and changes in texture and firmness may become easier to see.

For more established concerns such as acne scarring or deeper texture, results generally build across a properly timed course of treatment rather than appearing after a single appointment.

Can One Microneedling Treatment Make a Difference?

One treatment can make a visible difference to the way the skin looks and feels, particularly once the initial recovery period has passed.

Whether one treatment is enough is a different question.

If your goal is general skin maintenance or a fresher, smoother appearance, you may be happy with the improvement from an individual treatment. More established concerns such as acne scarring, significant texture or photoageing usually benefit from a course because each appropriately timed session creates another controlled repair cycle.

The number and frequency of treatments should be based on your skin and concern rather than an arbitrary package.

What Happens During Professional Microneedling?

At Skin Studio, treatment begins with an assessment of your skin. We want to establish what we're treating before deciding how we're going to treat it.

The skin is cleansed and prepared before the microneedling device is passed systematically across the treatment area. The treatment depth is selected according to the area, skin condition and concern, so treating general texture is not necessarily approached in exactly the same way as treating acne scarring.

You will feel the treatment. Most people describe a prickling or vibrating sensation, with certain areas of the face feeling more sensitive than others.

Afterwards, the skin commonly looks flushed and may feel warm or tight. Mild swelling, dryness or light flaking can also occur during recovery.

What Is Microneedling Aftercare Like in Bali?

The first few days after microneedling are about allowing the skin to recover without unnecessarily irritating it.

At Skin Studio, we advise avoiding strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours and temporarily stopping active skincare ingredients such as retinoids, AHA, BHA and vitamin C. Direct sun exposure and tanning should also be avoided while the skin recovers.

Sun protection is particularly important in Bali. Freshly treated skin needs sensible protection from our strong UV exposure, so this is not the treatment to book immediately before several days of unrestricted beach time.

Your treatment professional will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the depth of treatment and your skin.

Professional Microneedling vs At-Home Skin Needling

Professional and home microneedling shouldn't really be treated as equivalent versions of the same thing.

In clinic, the skin is assessed first and sterile equipment is used at controlled treatment depths. The depth can be adapted according to the facial area and concern, and the products used during and after treatment are selected accordingly.

Home devices are generally much more superficial. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that at-home microneedling products tend to produce less noticeable results and can cause problems when they are overused or used incorrectly. Read the American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on microneedling.

If you're trying to address a specific concern such as acne scarring, pigmentation or significant texture, professional assessment becomes particularly important.

Is Microneedling Worth It?

Microneedling is a very useful treatment when the concern matches what the treatment actually does.

If you want gradual improvement in skin texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines or suitable acne scarring, stimulating the skin's own repair process can make a meaningful difference.

Where the concern needs a different treatment mechanism, we'll recommend something else. That's why at Skin Studio we don't start with the assumption that everyone needs microneedling. We start with your skin.

FAQs

What Does Microneedling Do?

Microneedling creates controlled microchannels within the skin, triggering a natural repair response that stimulates collagen and elastin. Over time, this can improve skin texture, firmness, fine lines, enlarged-looking pores and suitable types of acne scarring.

What Are the Main Benefits of Microneedling?

The main microneedling benefits include smoother texture, improved collagen support, less prominent pores, softer fine lines and improvement in certain acne scars. The exact benefit depends on the concern being treated and the treatment protocol used.

Does Microneedling Stimulate Collagen?

Yes. Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy because the controlled repair response stimulates fibroblast activity and new collagen production within the treated skin.

Does Microneedling Reduce Pores?

Microneedling doesn't physically close pores. By improving collagen support and surrounding skin texture, it can make enlarged pores appear less prominent.

Is Microneedling Effective for Acne Scars?

Microneedling can improve certain indented or atrophic acne scars by stimulating collagen within and around the scar tissue. Different scar types respond differently, so professional assessment is important before treatment.

Can Microneedling Help Pigmentation?

Microneedling may be useful for selected pigmentation concerns and post-acne marks, but pigmentation requires proper assessment first. Treatment choice, settings, aftercare and strict sun protection are particularly important in Bali.

Can You See Microneedling Results After One Session?

Yes, one session can improve the appearance and feel of the skin. More established concerns such as acne scarring or deeper texture generally require a course of appropriately spaced treatments for a more significant result.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

Microneedling commonly feels like prickling, vibration or pressure, with some facial areas more sensitive than others. The experience varies according to treatment depth, area and individual sensitivity.

How Much Downtime Is There After Microneedling?

Redness, warmth, tightness, mild swelling or light flaking can occur for several days. Recovery varies according to treatment depth and individual skin response, and careful sun protection is particularly important afterwards.
